Effective Use of Educational Technology in Medical Education

The use of electronic technology in the presentation of medical education learning resources has dramatically increased with the advent of multimedia, the internet, and networked computers, transforming educational technologies from an esoteric domain to what is now taken to be mainstream applications integral to the medical educator's toolbox. While educational technologies have enhanced teaching and learning and will certainly continue to evolve, the medical education community is looking to ensure that educational theory guides and supports its use of technology to optimize learning opportunities, and justify the substantial investment of the institutional resources (people, facilities, money) involved.

Aligning current learning and education theory with research on presentation modalities, this report offers recommendations on when and how best to utilize available technologies in the medical education setting, while positing research questions which would serve to further advance an understanding of the appropriate role and application of these technologies in the learning environment.
